Brandt Veterinary Clinic, Inc.

Dr. Kate Brown

I have always had an interest in animals.  I was the kid who took care of the fish, mice, and other critters in elementary school.  My childhood weekends and vacations were spent in the farmlands of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where I gained an appreciation for nature, wildlife, and domestic animals. When I was 17, I was hired by the veterinarian who took care of my dog.  The next day, I changed my college major from drafting/architecture to Pre-Vet, and I haven’t looked back since.  I worked in a veterinary clinic for 5 years while getting my Bachelor of Sciences degree at the University of Maryland in 1977.  While applying and waiting to get into veterinary school, I milked cows at the Wilson Dairy, which is now home to the Washington Redskins stadium.  In 1982, I gradutated from the University of Florida, Summa Cum Laude.

After 1 year as a veterinarian in Kissimmee, I joined Dr. Jim Brandt in 1983.  He had tickets to the White Sox/Orioles playoff games and no one to cover his practice.  Timing is everything!  I had the great pleasure of working with Dr. Brandt until his retirement in 1996.  He taught me many things, including “always hire people smarter than you” and “never stop learning”.

After purchasing Brandt Veterinary Clinic in 1995, I continued to explore my interests in internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, preventative wellness care, and behavior medicine.  I received additional training in veterinary dentistry in 2006, which has become my passion. In 2007, it become obvious that our outdated veterinary hospital facility was no longer conducive to the style and quality of veterinary medicine we were delivering so we undertook a massive remodeling project that transformed our facility into the gem that it is today.  The physical hospital is great but Brandt Veterinary Clinic's greatest achievement has been the development of our talented veterinary team, who are as passionate about our patients and pet parents as I am.

I have 2 beautiful adopted children, Frankie and Zoe, both domestic shorthair tabby cats from Suncoast Humane Society.   My interests outside of veterinary medicine include camping, hiking, canoeing, music appreciation, and building things.  I love getting away to the mountains and sticks, and have participated in the construction of log and straw bale houses.  Every summer I camp in southwest Colorado, with a view of Mesa Verde.  Someday soon, I will have a little cabin to camp in.  My fantasy is to learn how to play my dad’s banjo, with a dog at my feet, 2 cats waiting for me in bed and the coyotes celebrating in the distance.
